Welcome to the 2026/27 Fellow Cohort: A New Chapter for Rule of Law and Democracy in Europe

We are thrilled to welcome our new Fellow Cohort for the 2026/27 academic year!

This year’s cohort brings together 15 outstanding scholars and practitioners from eight EU Member States and one EU candidate country, representing a balanced mix of academic and practical expertise. Their diverse backgrounds and perspectives will enrich the dialogue on the rule of law and democracy in Europe, fostering a multiperspective exchange on the pressing challenges facing our democracies.

Over the coming year, our Fellows will be hosted by leading academic and practice-oriented institutions across Europe. During their research stays, they will expand, deepen, and connect ongoing debates on democracy and the rule of law with their own insights and contributions. Their work will explore critical questions, such as:

  • Are EU policies on critical raw materials a dirty path to a clean future?

  • How are formally compliant democracies undermined from within when they suspend the rule of law for politically marginalised groups?

  • How does authoritarian digital governance in Belarus and Georgia criminalise participation?

  • Does the new EU Migration and Asylum Pact protect survivors of sexual and gender-based violence or put their rights at risk?

The cohort’s journey begins with the Fellows’ Exchange Meeting in Berlin from 28 to 30 October 2026. This in-person gathering will serve as the starting point for their collaboration, offering a space to connect with one another, engage with the re:constitution programme more broadly, and explore topics ranging from academic freedom to the right of access to information.

We look forward to an impactful year of collaboration with our new Fellows and are excited to see the contributions they will make to the re:constitution network and the broader debates on the state and future of the rule of law and democracy in Europe and beyond.
