Policing Solidarity? The Rising Criminalization of Civil Movements in Europe: A Case Study of the Palestine Solidarity Movement and the Erosion of Democratic Freedoms

This project examines the increasing criminalization of rights movements in Europe through the case study of the Palestine solidarity movement. Across several European countries, expressions of support for Palestinian rights have been met with protest bans, surveillance, de-platforming, and legal repression. These actions reflect a broader trend of securitizing dissent and shrinking civic space, raising serious concerns about democratic freedoms, the rule of law, and the right to freedom of assembly and association. This project aims to document the experiences of affected individuals and organizations, analyze national and regional patterns, and engage with civil society and policymakers. By centering the Palestine solidarity movement—an intersection of international justice advocacy, diaspora activism, and anti-racist politics—the study highlights how political expression is increasingly framed as a threat.
