In October 2021, we welcome the third generation of re:constitution Fellows. Besides working on their research projects during their individual ‘stages’ at institutions of research and practice across Europe, the Fellows come together for three Fellows' Exchange Meetings throughout the academic year. The Berlin event from 26 to 29 October 2021 marks their first personal meeting. Although the pandemic is far from over, we have learned to live with the virus and now feel confident enough to return to the roots of the re:constitution programme: facilitating personal exchange of scholars and practitioners from all over Europe.
The first Fellows' Exchange Meeting focuses on the state of fundamental rights in Europe and how their protection is linked to safeguarding the rule of law. In various interactive sessions, the Fellows have the opportunity to engage with experts whose work focuses on the protection of fundamental rights in Europe, be it in academia, on European or national levels, in policy, capacity-building or research.
The programme features:
Prof. Başak Çalı - the Professor of International Law at Hertie School of Governance and Co-Director of the School’s Centre for Fundamental Rights opens our Welcome Reception with a Keynote on The European Court of Human Rights and the Shadow of Rule of Law Backsliding.
Ksenija Turković - the vice-president of the European Court of Human Rights gives the Fellows some practical insights into the connection of the protection of the rule of law and the enforcement of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Democracy Reporting International - our programme partner organizes a workshop on the Freedom of Information.
Recharging advocacy for Rights in Europe (RARE) - members of the network as well as Rare’s Policy Leader Fellow Marta Pardavi join the re:constitution Fellows for an interactive exchange session about current challenges of working towards the protection of fundamental rights and civic spaces in both Academia and Practice.
Everyone Foundation - the initiative proposes an Update of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU by adding six new fundamental rights to better protect citizens in a globalized world. Board Member Bijan Moini tells us more about their ideas in a conversation with re:constitution Alumna Stefanie Beermann.
