On 26 June 2026, re:constitution alumnae Colleen Boland and Cristina Blasi Casagran convene an interdisciplinary workshop at the Autonomous University of Barcelona which is also accessible online.

The event brings together legal scholars, policymakers, technologists, and civil society actors to critically examine how Artificial Intelligence is reshaping democratic governance across Europe. While the EU has taken a global lead with the AI Act, significant gaps remain in understanding how AI interacts with core democratic principles like the rule of law, separation of powers, political pluralism, and citizen participation. This workshop takes democracy and constitutionalism as its primary analytical lens, moving beyond purely technical or regulatory debates.

Discussions will map both the risks and the opportunities: on one side, algorithmic disinformation, electoral interference, opacity in public administration, and the growing influence of private actors over democratic infrastructures; on the other, the potential of AI to improve public service delivery, support evidence-based policymaking, and open new forms of civic engagement.

The workshop is designed not only as a space for exchange, but as a co-creation environment generating collaborative research outputs, policy recommendations, and the foundations for future partnerships.

The event is organised as part of re:constitution's Alumni Incubator Fund, which supports interdisciplinary projects developed by alumni reflecting the network's commitment to sustaining work on democracy and the rule of law beyond the fellowship year.
