‘Who gets to speak? Media Pluralism – a Contested Concept and its Application in EU Member States’

re:constitution Seminar on Media Pluralism

The third re:constitution Seminar is dedicated to media pluralism in Europe. As European values are increasingly challenged in some European Member States, respect for independent and pluralistic media becomes ever more important. It is vital to channel a multitude of voices into public debates, offering counter argumentations and ensuring scrutiny. As such, media freedom and media pluralism are vital to uphold democracy in the EU.

We think it is time to talk about media pluralism. In collaboration with Jan-Werner Müller, Roger Williams Straus Professor of Social Sciences, Professor of Politics, Princeton University and Fellow at Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, we are organizing an online background meeting on 24 June 2021. The background discussion will be preceded by a public online panel organised by Democracy Reporting International, asking how the rule of law can contribute to strengthening media freedom.

Renate Nikolay, Head of Cabinet of European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová, will explain the European Commission's ideas and approach to strengthening media pluralism in Europe in her keynote. Afterwards, during our closed  background meeting, the participants will comment on three core issues of the current situation of media pluralism in Europe in an open and free exchange in topical panels - each moderated by re:constitution fellows or alumni.
